According to the latest survey by Stats SA, there are an estimated 2.8 million orphans in South Africa. This means that 14% of all children in South Africa do not have a living biological mother, father, or both parents.
Without any protection or support, they live in poverty and lack many fundamental necessities and rights, including a safe home, quality education, and healthcare. Their lives are incredibly challenging, with the risk of illiteracy, disease, child labour, lifelong poverty, and even death.
At Islamic Relief, we do not believe in simply providing one-off care to support orphaned children. Instead, we invest in their long-term futures and support their families, guardians, and local communities to provide long-lasting, sustainable solutions to poverty and inequality.
