A Ramadan like no other.

We find ourselves in times of uncertainty, insecurity and stress. The Covid-19 pandemic that has swept the world, means that there are more hungry mouths to feed, people losing their jobs,  risk of infections, and overall it is a time where institutions like Islamic Relief are needed the most.

This year is different but no different in what we do and what we stand for. Our mission is to serve humanity for the pleasure of the Almighty. And it is with this mission and intention in mind that we have carried out our work with generous help of our donors and our hardworking, relentless staff and volunteers.,

A total of 2 800 food parcels from Islamic Relief was delivered to the Mpumalanga food bank which operates under the auspices of the provincial department of social development.

MEC Thandi Shongwe said: “As the Department of Social Development, we are grateful to the Islamic community for this kind gesture which incidentally comes at a time when they are observing Ramadan Month. We are blessed as a province that this comes at a time when our communities are in dire need of it because of the outbreak of the Coronavirus.”

The delivery of the food hampers is part of a larger COVID-19 Response that Islamic Relief initiated since the outbreak of the pandemic and subsequent lock down. The focus is on helping the most vulnerable in the communities across South Africa – the elderly, sick, child-led homes, orphans and those reliant on informal trade as a source of income. Thousands of food hampers and hygiene packs were distributed around the country.

Alongside independent interventions, Islamic Relief is part of a multi-disciplinary COVID task team made up of non-profit organisations, civil society groups and ulema bodies to assist the vulnerable communities across the country.  We are working closely with the Department of Social Welfare to access the people in need of assistance.

To date the following number of hampers have been donated:

Johannesburg: 1472
Cape Town: 4673
KZN: 1175

The recipients of our initiatives were overjoyed and grateful as these donations have impacted tremendously in their daily lives.

We send our heartfelt gratitude and pray that a reward so bountiful awaits our donors, staff and volunteers in this world and the hereafter, through the mercy of the Almighty. Ameen
