Islamic Relief South Africa established the Bursary Program in order to provide assistance to underprivileged students with financial support to access higher education.

A tertiary qualification empowers young adults to break the cycle of poverty, however financial exclusion remains a big concern in South Africa. 51% of the youth cited a lack of financial means as a barrier for them embarking on studying at a tertiary institute and attaining a degree that will enable them to secure employment.

Islamic Relief launched the Bursary Program as an investment in the youth that will be driving massive change in the socio-economic status of underprivileged communities in South Africa.

“Higher education is highly valued by Islamic Relief South Africa as a means of fostering self-reliance in refugee and South African students, as well as strengthening the protective effects of education. This promotes lifelong learning and providing young people with role models who can demonstrate the positive effects of education on individuals, communities, and societies”,said Yassine Labidi – Head of the Programmes Department at Islamic Relief South Africa.

The Bursary Program began as an addendum to Islamic Relief’s highly acclaimed Orphan Sponsorship Programme which currently assists over 1300 children in South Africa, the Program was then extended to community members in need of financial resources to access higher education.

Applicants must be currently engaged in an undergraduate program or intend to study at 1 of the 26 national universities, they must have an acceptance letter, and a track record of academic excellence.
