Millions of children are filling their new backpacks with brand-new school supplies in preparation for the start of the new school year. It is an exciting but nerve-racking time: starting a new grade, making new friends, and meeting a new teacher. However, this is not a commodity for millions of underprivileged children locally and globally. The socioeconomic issues in South Africa and abroad, such as unemployment, crime, corruption, and poverty, are steadily rising. Islamic Relief has highlighted these concerns and is working towards educating, informing, and empowering the local communities to be better prepared in the face of contemporary challenges.

We have been diligently working in the education sector and see education as a vital tool towards empowering and uplifting underprivileged communities in South Africa and abroad. Our objective is to create equal opportunities for disadvantaged people to seek knowledge. How we support underprivileged students

Education for children is one of the most important aspects affecting the future of communities in need, locally and globally. At Islamic Relief, we believe in the need to educate, learn, and grow. We help all children gain a critical education, learn much-needed skills, and develop a bright and happy future for themselves.

Educating an underprivileged student can be challenging, as these students often face additional obstacles due to limited access to resources and support at home. Here are some strategies Islamic Relief implements to ensure students are supported and can uphold their dignity in the school environment.

• We provide access to resources: Ensuring students have access to the resources they need to succeed, such as textbooks, stationery, uniforms, backpacks, and other learning materials.
• We offer extra support: Providing support to students, such as tutoring or study groups, ensures a greater understanding of the work done.
• Encourage a growth mindset: Help students develop a growth mindset, ensuring the development of their abilities through hard work and effort. A growth mindset helps them persevere in the face of challenges and setbacks.
• Foster a positive learning environment: Create a positive, supportive learning environment that encourages the student to take risks, ask questions, and make mistakes as a natural part of the learning process.
• Involve the community: Involve the community in the student’s education by seeking resources and support from local organizations.
• Advocate for the student: Advocate for the needs and rights of students, ensuring they have the same opportunities to succeed as their more privileged peers.

We also facilitate learning in the safest manner possible, leading to the transformation of their lives.

Islamic Relief has supported the education of more than 285,000 people across 21 countries by funding mobile classrooms, rebuilding and refurbishing schools, and supporting children with special educational needs, school equipment, and teachers’ salaries.
