Tackling violence in Yemen
Islamic Relief teamed up with the UNHCR to tackle violence – including violence against women and children – in Yemen.
The innovative 16-day awareness campaign saw Islamic Relief delivering a range of activities in schools across the districts of Amran and Haradh. Beginning in November and ending last month (December), the campaign targeted 170 students and ten teachers.
Awareness sessions explored the consequences of school violence, domestic violence, and the issue of early marriage – which include high education drop-out rates which fuel illiteracy and poverty.
Information brochures and CDs were distributed, together with colourful t-shirts and caps carrying the message ‘Schools without Violence’.
Forty mothers and fathers that live in camps for internally displaced people took part in an awareness session held in our Amran office. The session engaged parents in standing against violence and reducing conflict in the community.
School students put on a special drama and singing performance to mark the end of the campaign.
We were pleased to welcome other organizations which attended the activities – including UNHCR, Oxfam, Save the Children, IOM, the Charitable Society for Social Welfare, and Care. Representatives from local authorities and the Ministry of Education also attended – as did school principals and people from local communities.
Islamic Relief has been implementing projects in Yemen since 2004.
