Devastating Floods in Kosovo
Since Monday, January 19, 2023, weather conditions across Kosovo have become very harsh, with strong winds and rapid rainfall causing rivers to overflow and flood. Severe flooding has affected large areas of western and northern Kosovo, including towns and cities like Mitrovica, Vushtrria, Peja, Skenderaj, and Decan.
Some of the poorest towns, such as Skenderaj and Mitrovic, have been severely affected and declared a state of emergency. Numerous homes and businesses have experienced water damage, which has destroyed some and severely damaged many others. Roads have also become very muddy and impassable. The intensity of rainfall has caused problems for water treatment facilities, leaving several communities with reduced access to drinking water.
No casualties have been reported, but there has been a substantial loss of homes and belongings, leaving hundreds of families without the most basic necessities.
