Since 8 October 2023, Lebanon has experienced a sharp escalation in Israeli attacks, forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and plunging the country – which is home to the highest per-capita concentration of refugees in the world – even further into crisis.
According to UN reports, 3,386 people have been killed – including at least 220 children – and 14,417 people have been injured since October 2023.
Airstrikes have targeted hospitals, medical centres, and ambulances.
More than 1.2 million people – including 400,000 children – have already been internally displaced over the past year. Many are now in desperate need of aid.
At least 24,000 residential buildings have been badly damaged or completely destroyed.
Islamic Relief first started working in Lebanon in 2006, providing war-affected communities with food, clean water and essential household items. We then concentrated on remote rural areas along the southern border – rebuilding hospitals, repairing damaged water facilities and supporting people to rebuild their livelihoods. Following the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2011, we started providing Syrian refugees in Lebanon with food, healthcare, water and sanitation.
Since the escalation of violence in October 2023, we have delivered thousands of food parcels, hygiene kits, blankets and mattresses to families displaced by the escalating attacks, helping more than 48,000 people affected by the crisis.
