Yemen: A country in conflict
Recent conflict and bombardment in Yemen is worsening an already devastating humanitarian situation. Tens of civilians have so far been reported dead, while there is no clear sign of when the conflict will come to an end.
In Yemen, an estimated 15.9 million people – or 61% of the population – require humanitarian assistance. This is an increase of 8% since last year. The rise is primarily due to increasing conflict, a growth in arrivals of migrants and refugees, and population growth in areas with poor access to even the most basic services.
A lack of access to food affects over 10 million people in Yemen. Despite narrow improvements, far too many Yemenis still struggle with food insecurity and malnutrition. 10.6 million Yemenis have trouble meeting their daily food needs. In addition, 1.6 million people require nutrition services – including 850,000 acutely malnourished children, of whom 160,000 are severely affected.
An estimated 13.4 million people lack access to safe drinking water, and 12 million have no proper sanitation facilities. At the same time, 8.4 million people lack access to basic health care.
