Help Vulnerable Families Survive Winter

Extreme winter conditions pose a significant challenge for millions of vulnerable and destitute people and communities experiencing winter. The harsh winter weather and the plummeting temperatures make it difficult for those living in poverty to access fundamentals such as food, warmth, shelter and healthcare. The continuous struggle to feed themselves, keep warm, keep safe, and live during winter is specifically dangerous for millions of displaced and homeless people at risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and other health problems. In addition, skyrocketing food and fuel prices have pushed more people into poverty, making the struggle for survival much more difficult. It is essential to provide resources, and support to these communities, help them navigate the challenges of winter and improve their overall well-being.

Islamic Relief’s winter appeal is a fundraising campaign which aims to support and assist people in need during the winter months, particularly in regions affected by extreme cold and poverty. The winter appeal typically focuses on providing warm clothing, food, and shelter to those struggling to survive the harsh winter season. The funds raised through the winter appeal support Islamic Relief’s ongoing humanitarian work and response to winter conditions emergencies. Severe winter conditions can occur in various parts of the world and have devastating impacts on people and communities, especially the vulnerable who lack adequate resources to cope. These conditions can lead to increased humanitarian needs, including food and shelter assistance, medical care, and other forms of support.

Islamic Relief’s dedication to winter aid

In 2022, through your generous support, we provided winter kits to more than 435,000 people in 17 countries through our Winter Appeal. Winter kits vary in different countries and include anything from food aid to household items such as blankets, kerosene heaters, and winter clothing.

This winter, more people than ever are in desperate need – so we are determined to reach even more people. We aim to support and provide over 72,000 winter kits to more than 455,000 people in 16 countries, including families in war-torn countries such as Gaza and Syria, as well as Afghanistan, where most families do not know where their next meal will come from.

The effects of winter

the effects of winter are more severe in poorer countries and exacerbate existing poverty and hardship, which includes:

  • Lack of adequate shelter: Many underprivileged people live in makeshift homes or structures that provide little protection from the cold, leading to an increased risk of hypothermia and other health problems.
  • Food insecurity: Winter can disrupt food production and transportation, leading to shortages and higher prices, making it difficult for people to access sufficient food.
  • Health problems: The cold weather can lead to increased respiratory infections, and lack of proper clothing and shelter can make people more susceptible to illness.
  • Disruption of livelihoods: Winter weather can disrupt transportation and make it more difficult for people to work and earn a living.

These effects create a vicious cycle of poverty, leading to increased hardship and making it difficult for people to improve their situation. This is where Islamic Relief comes in and supports the vulnerable and destitute families struggling to survive the winter season.

Islamic Reliefs response

Despite winter lasting one season, Islamic Relief works year-round to build programming that helps vulnerable people cope with the harsh winter weather. Our winter appeal provides relief to thousands of people in various countries around the world facing severe winter conditions. Some examples of the work we do include:

  • Providing warm clothing, blankets, and heating fuel to families in need.
  • Supporting emergency shelters and distributing hot meals to people who are homeless or without access to adequate food.
  • Delivering medical assistance and health education to communities affected by harsh winter conditions.
  • Building infrastructure such as homes, schools, and water wells to provide long-term support to communities in need.

We can only achieve this and provide aid through the generous support of our donors. You make a difference in the lives of those suffering from the harsh winter realities. We work closely with implementing partners to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most in the most dignified manner. Our objective is to help and support people to survive the winter season and provide a pathway out of poverty for those struggling to survive.
