In Somalia, a staggering 73% of the population live on less than £1.50 a day. Struggling with immense poverty, countless men, women and children lack basic essentials such as a regular supply of food, basic healthcare and shelter.
This is sadly a reality that 42-year-old Hassan knows all too well…
Hassan: Longing for stability
Hassan, his wife Naima and their nine children have been living in Ceynte camp for displaced people for a staggering 15 years.
All of his children were born in the camp where the family live in a hut that doesn’t offer them any protection from rain, hot or cold weather.
To earn money, Hassan repairs shoes and utensils locally known as a blacksmith. However, the family struggle day-in day-out with poverty.
Alhamdulillah, our team in Somalia are on the ground providing life-transforming support to Hassan and many more people in need.
In May 2020, Hassan and his family were given their very first shelter by Islamic Relief. His wife Naima never expected their life to improve in this way:
“I can’t describe how happy and appreciative we are to Islamic Relief for providing this shelter for my family for the first time in our life. This gives us more strength and dignity and now as we continue, we feel protected from the weather.”-Naima.
This new shelter will change the family’s life and so of course, Hassan was delighted with the support:
“I pray all time for our brothers and sisters who contributed to the construction of our new home. This means a lot to us and we will continue to pray for them always.”
