Food for Flooded Afghan Families
Islamic Relief has distributed 160 food packages as part of its emergency response to the recent floods in northern Afghanistan.
The flash floods, triggered by heavy rainfall in April, killed more than 130 people – with scores more still missing and 16,000 people displaced. Across 23 provinces, over 45,000 Afghans were affected by flooding– 27,000 of whom were in Sari Pul, Faryab and Jawzjan.
Up to 2,700 people are feared dead and 700 families are thought to be affected in Badakhshan, which was hit by a landslide on Friday.
The initial phase of our emergency response has seen the distribution of much-needed food parcels in Sari Pul, where more than 1,000 families are in need of food aid. Provided to the most vulnerable families, the parcels contained essential staples including wheat, beans, rice, and cooking oil.
The distribution was carried out in Ulqani-e-Kalan, Sailbar-e- Paeen, and Sailbar-e- Bala in coordination with the Afghan government and local authorities.
Islamic Relief, which has been working in the country since 1992, will continue to provide vital emergency aid to families grappling with the aftermath of the floods. We also want to work with the affected communities to improve disaster-resilience and help vulnerable people to rebuild their livelihoods.
