MPs unite to support Cakes4Syria
This Ramadan ten MPs around the country across four political parties have come together to support Islamic Relief’s Cakes4Syria Campaign. At a time of significant political debate and differences, their cross-party support has provided a unified voice in support of our life-saving work in Syria.
The Cake Campaign is a volunteer-led cake delivery service that runs during the month of Ramadan. Every year over a thousand young volunteers nationwide deliver thousands of cakes whilst fasting in order to make a positive difference, through Islamic Relief, to those affected by the Syrian conflict.
In the past three years, over 60,000 chocolate fudge cakes have been sold and over half a million pounds has been raised for our Syria appeal.
Cakes have been delivered across the country this year to a wide range of MPs and MSPs including Andrew Mitchell (Conservative); Liberal Democrats Tom Brake, Nick Clegg and Tim Farron (the latter former and current leaders of the party); Yvette Cooper, Stephen Timms, Jon Ashworth and Anas Sarwar (Labour); and Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh and Humza Yousaf (Scottish National Party).
Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh MP, who received a cake and was also a guest speaker at Islamic Relief’s ‘Welcoming Ramadan’ dinner, said: “I’m delighted to be able to lend my support to this fantastic volunteer-led campaign. Islamic Relief have done a great job not only in fundraising for this vital cause, but also in raising awareness of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria.
“I wish all the volunteers in Scotland and beyond a successful campaign this year, and encourage as many people as possible to get involved in any way they can.”
Since the conflict began Islamic Relief has delivered more than £140 million worth of aid inside Syria and in neighbouring countries, assisting over 6.5 million Syrians. We are distributing food packs, clothes and medical supplies to communities under siege within Syria and displaced people along the Turkish border.
We are also running or supporting camps and providing livelihood programmes, education and psychosocial support for refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. In Europe our teams are assisting Syrian refugees in Greece, Italy, Macedonia and Germany.
You can order your cakes now for just £10 each by visiting https://thecakecampaign.org or calling 01274 952 144. The deadline to order for our last delivery in Ramadan is Saturday 2nd July at 6pm.
