Islamic Relief South Africa (IRSA) would like to extend its heartfelt congratulations to the Grade 12 learners and academic staff of The Leadership College (TLC) in Manenberg for achieving and overall pass rate of 87% upon the release of the 2018 National Senior Certificate Matric results. We are extremely proud of 17-year-old Vuyiswa Kubalasa – an Islamic Relief rights holder – who achieved a phenomenal 7 distinctions. She scored 98% for Physical Science, 97% for Accounting, 94% for Mathematics, 93% for Life Sciences and 90% for Life Orientation.   Her results were achieved on hard work and determination. It is safe to say that she achieved her dream of being recognised as a top student, making her family proud. Living in the impoverished community of Philippi in Cape Town has not been easy for Vuyiswa and her family. Her father is a tailor and is the only breadwinner in the household.

“My father is our main source of income. He is a tailor but when customers are scarce, he does not earn any money. We have enough to survive and have become used to living on just the necessities.”
Islamic Relief South Africa formed a strategic partnership with the 2 Oceans Education Foundation in 2014 to provide disadvantaged youth access to quality education. The Educate-A-Leader project has been endorsed by South African Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor and the Department of Education. In 2018, 269 TLC students received support from Islamic Relief South Africa through the Educate A Leader programme. This funding ensured that students could concentrate on their academic work as all their educational expenses i.e. tuition fees, school uniforms, stationery and extra-curricular activities were covered.
“Vuyiswa’s result is a notable achievement for the school as it indicates hope in the wake of high rates of crime, poverty and unemployment. This also serves as an indication to many, that with the right guidance and passion of the educators, anyone has the ability to excel despite the challenges,” the school said in a statement.
Vuyiswa plans to study either Actuarial Science at Wits University in Johannesburg or Engineering at Stellenbosch University. We wish her well for her tertiary studies and future endeavours.
