Since 25 May 2017, the incessant southwestern monsoon has caused widespread flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka, with 15 out of the 25 districts severely impacted by the extreme weather.

The Sri Lanka districts of Galle, Kalutara, Matara and Ratnapura are the worst affected by the extreme weather and even more areas are threatened with submersion as water levels continue to swell in most main rivers due to monsoon.

This year’s floods are the worst since the country was affected back in 2003 and the damage is increasing. The situation is likely to deteriorate further as the MET department predicts above average rainfall in some districts throughout June 2017.

Emergency food and non-food aid

Right now Islamic Relief is on the ground providing 540 families in the badly affected Ratnapura district with food supplies, consisting of rice, pulses, sugar, milk, energy biscuits and canned fish to cover their immediate needs, as well as living essentials, such as kitchen utensils.

To strengthen the capacity of our local team on the ground and to support the on-going relief activities, an additional disaster response specialist has also been deployed from Islamic Relief Pakistan.
