Eliminating child labour in Bangladesh

Child labour has jeopardised the physical, mental and moral well-being of over a million children in Bangladesh.

Child labour is illegal in international law and forces children into hazardous and dangerous work, children are also deprived of all their rights such as education, health, recreation, development and most importantly, protection.

Children as the main breadwinners

Many families rely on the income generated by their children for survival. Because of this child labour is often the only option left for impoverished families. Employers often prefer to employ children because they are cheaper and considered to be more obedient than adults.

SubhanAllah, thanks to your support during our first live appeal on Islam Channel this Ramadan, we’ve been able to develop our programme to eliminate the most hazardous forms of child labour. Your donations on our first live appeal have ensured that 1,500 children can enjoy the basic rights we so often take for granted.

Acknowledgment from the Bangladeshi government

Islamic Relief has developed a comprehensive model, acknowledged by the Government of Bangladesh, to eliminate hazardous child labor based on five pillars; Prevention, Rehabilitation, Protection, Development and Sustainability. We ensure that we tackle issues at their root cause, whilst not overlooking those who are in need now.

We believe the protection and well-being of every life is of paramount importance. Therefore we would like to take the opportunity to thank you deeply for your support throughout the years.
