Collaboration with Age UK to help over 5,000 elderly people in Britain this winter

Islamic Relief is delighted to announce its collaboration with Age UK to help vulnerable older people keep warm this winter. Do you live in East London, Birmingham or Bradford? Your help is needed! Get involved by donating your time and enthusiasm to this exciting new project.

As a volunteer, you will learn new skills, meet new people, and importantly provide your support to local older people who need it.  There is an opportunity for everyone – no matter what your experience, interests or availability!

Why Older People?  Why Winter?

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “He is not of us who does not have mercy on young children, nor honor the elderly” (Hadith Al-Tirmidhi 17.23-24)

Each winter, one older person dies every seven minutes because of the cold weather.

Fuel poverty and poor general health is a lethal combination – and the sad fact is that older people are more susceptible than most to both. For those who are lonely or isolated- more than a million older people haven’t spoken to anyone for more than a month and half will spend Christmas Day alone this year- the dangers are even greater.

Islamic Relief’s collaboration will enable Age UK’s Winter Warmth Programme to support over 5,000 older people across the country. Islamic Relief UK volunteers will help Age UK partners in Bradford, Birmingham and East London to deliver essential services for older people during the winter months.

How can I get involved?

Islamic Relief are seeking enthusiastic volunteers in East London, Birmingham and Bradford. Activities will take place within the months of December 2014 and March 2015.

Whether you want to support a one-off event or help out every week- your role and time commitment can vary based on your capacity and chosen activities. It’s up to you! You will receive training and support throughout your engagement with the project.

You can help in so many ways! Here are some ideas of what you can do:

  • Lend a hand at the local Age UK’s winter events and lunch clubs
  • Offer direct support such as helping with an older person’s shopping or to get to a doctor’s appointment
  • Support older people living in fuel poverty through provision of tailored information and advice
